OUR WORK

The Paint Factory

Australia’s first fully integrated arts village

Project Overview

The Paint Factory is set to become a vibrant creative precinct in Yeronga, in Brisbane’s western suburbs. It is located at the former Taubmans paint factory, which closed in 2015. The site is now earmarked for development to become Australia’s first fully integrated arts village, a vibrant precinct where artists and the wider community can live, work and play.

The owners and developers of the site engaged Bespoken in 2019 to assist with media management, before broadening the remit to include community and stakeholder engagement.

Results

34,000+
stakeholders were engaged in the process
6,000+
stakeholders participated in engagement activities

Strategy

To drive authentic community engagement around the site’s plan, we:

  • Facilitated workshops with artists and key stakeholders
  • Liaised with media
  • Developed content across social media, digital channels and project communications
  • Planned and delivered community events
  • Built relationships with local residents, industry representatives and government stakeholders to discuss the proposed plans.

The feedback curated from these myriad activities helped the team shape its vision for Australia’s first fully integrated arts village, a mixed-use precinct where creatives and art enthusiasts could work, live and play.

To demonstrate the site’s potential, The Paint Factory is already being used as a thriving creative hub. The existing site has been used to create art, film music videos and TV productions (such as Boy Swallows Universe), and has hosted major festivals like the Anywhere Festival and Brisbane Festival. Events like BrisStyle Earring Markets and Ceramic Makers Market have also been held at the site, showcasing the community-driven, inclusive nature of the precinct.

This has helped bring the vision to life, generating positive community sentiment and positioning The Paint Factory as an exciting development for Yeronga, Brisbane and the wider arts sector.

Our engagement team worked alongside the broader team and the project received an approval from Brisbane City Council to change the use of the site. The approval not only secured the future of the precinct but also contributed to broader city objectives around housing supply, cultural infrastructure and economic development.
